Inside the Somali-Led Resistance to Trump’s Assault on Minneapolis

Somalis are fighting back against the injustices and discrimination they face in the United States. From homemade sambusas for protesters to foot patrols on the lookout for ICE, the Somali community in Minneapolis is leading the resistance against Trump’s assault on their city.

The Somali community in Minneapolis has a long history of resilience and resistance. Many Somalis fled their war-torn country in search of safety and a better life in the United States. However, upon arriving in Minneapolis, they were met with discrimination and racism. Despite these challenges, the Somali community has thrived and become an integral part of the city’s fabric.

But with the rise of Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, the Somali community has once again become a target. In 2017, Trump signed an executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries, including Somalia. This ban has caused immense hardship for Somalis trying to reunite with their families or seek refuge in the United States.

In addition to the travel ban, the Somali community in Minneapolis has also been targeted by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids. These raids have caused fear and anxiety within the community, with many families living in constant fear of being separated.

But instead of succumbing to fear, the Somali community has chosen to fight back. One of the ways they are doing this is through food. Sambusas, a popular Somali snack, have become a symbol of resistance in Minneapolis. During protests against Trump’s policies, Somali activists have been handing out homemade sambusas to protesters, showing their support and solidarity.

But the resistance doesn’t stop there. The Somali community has also organized foot patrols to protect their neighborhoods from ICE raids. These patrols, made up of community members, keep a lookout for any suspicious activity and alert residents if ICE is spotted in the area. This has not only helped to keep the community safe but has also fostered a sense of unity and empowerment within the Somali community.

The Somali community in Minneapolis has also been actively involved in local politics, with many running for office and advocating for their community’s rights. In 2018, Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American, became the first Somali-American elected to Congress, representing Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. Her election was a significant milestone for the Somali community and a testament to their resilience and determination.

But the fight for justice and equality is far from over. The Somali community continues to face discrimination and prejudice, but they are not backing down. They are using their voices and their actions to resist and demand change.

The recent protests against police brutality and systemic racism have also seen the Somali community come together in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Many Somalis have joined the protests, highlighting the intersectionality of their struggles and standing in solidarity with their Black brothers and sisters.

The Somali-led resistance in Minneapolis is a testament to the strength and resilience of the community. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have chosen to fight back with love, unity, and determination. Their actions have not only inspired their own community but have also shown the world the power of resistance and solidarity.

As we continue to fight against injustice and discrimination, let us look to the Somali community in Minneapolis as an example of how we can come together and create change. Let us stand in solidarity with them and support their fight for justice and equality. Together, we can build a better and more inclusive society for all.
