ICE Prison’s 911 Calls Overwhelm a Rural Georgia Emergency System

The United States has long been known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. However, recent events have shed light on a dark reality that many of us may not have been aware of. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has been under scrutiny for their treatment of detainees in their facilities, particularly in the Stewart Detention Center located in rural Georgia. And now, a shocking revelation has come to light – the emergency system in this area is being overwhelmed by the 911 calls coming from this very detention center.

It all started when a 911 operator in Georgia received a call from the Stewart Detention Center. The caller was in need of medical assistance for a detainee who was experiencing a medical emergency. However, to the shock of the operator, she was unable to send an ambulance to the facility because all available units were already responding to calls from the same detention center. This alarming incident has brought to attention the dire situation of the emergency response system in this area.

The Stewart Detention Center, located in Lumpkin, Georgia, is one of the largest immigration detention centers in the country. It is operated by the private prison company, CoreCivic, and has a capacity to hold over 1,700 detainees. The majority of the detainees in this facility are immigrants who are awaiting their court hearings or deportation. Many of them have not committed any serious crimes and are simply seeking asylum in the United States.

The conditions in this detention center have been described as inhumane and deplorable by human rights organizations. Detainees have reported being subjected to physical and verbal abuse, lack of access to medical care, and unsanitary living conditions. The recent incident of the overwhelmed emergency system has only added to the already existing concerns about the treatment of detainees in this facility.

The 911 calls from the Stewart Detention Center have been on the rise in recent years. According to a report by The Intercept, there were over 200 calls made from the facility in 2016 alone. This number has only increased in the following years, with many of the calls being related to medical emergencies. The lack of proper medical care in the facility has forced detainees to seek help from outside sources, leading to an overwhelming number of calls to the emergency system.

The situation has become so dire that the local emergency response system is struggling to keep up with the calls from the detention center. The small town of Lumpkin, with a population of just over 2,700, does not have the resources to deal with such a high volume of emergency calls. This has not only put a strain on the emergency services but has also put the lives of the residents at risk.

The 911 operator who received the call from the detention center, and was unable to send an ambulance, said, “It’s a small town, we don’t have that many resources. We can’t keep sending all of our units to the detention center and leave the town unprotected.” This raises serious concerns about the safety of the residents of Lumpkin and the surrounding areas.

The Stewart Detention Center is not the only immigration detention center in the country that has been under fire for its treatment of detainees. The conditions in these facilities have been a cause for concern for many years, with reports of abuse and neglect being brought to light. However, the recent incident of the overwhelmed emergency system in Georgia has shed light on the urgency of addressing this issue.

The government must take immediate action to improve the conditions in these detention centers and ensure that detainees have access to proper medical care. The safety of both the detainees and the residents of the surrounding areas must be a top priority. The 911 calls from the Stewart Detention Center must not be ignored, as they are a cry for help from individuals who are already in a vulnerable situation.

It is time for the United States to live up to its reputation as the land of the free and the home of the brave. The treatment of immigrants in detention centers must align with the values of this country. The overwhelmed emergency system in rural Georgia is just one example of the dire situation in these facilities. It is time for the government to take action and address this issue before it spirals out of control. The lives of countless individuals depend on it.
