Dems Push for “Educational Gag Order” Over Palestine Lessons in California

In a move that has sparked controversy and outrage, Democratic lawmakers in California are pushing for a new bill that would restrict the teaching of certain topics in ethnic studies classes. The bill, which is being touted as a measure to combat antisemitism, has been met with criticism from educators and activists who argue that it goes too far and could have a chilling effect on free speech and academic freedom.

The proposed legislation, known as AB 331, would require all high schools in the state to offer an ethnic studies course as a graduation requirement. While this may seem like a positive step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in education, the bill also includes a provision that would prohibit any instruction that “promotes discrimination or hostility towards any race, religion, ethnicity, or nationality.” This language has raised concerns among many who fear that it could be used to censor discussions about Palestine and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Critics of the bill argue that this provision is specifically targeting lessons on Palestine and would essentially create an “educational gag order” on the topic.
