Trump Calls His Enemies Terrorists. Does That Mean He Can Just Kill Them?

From boat strikes to killings in the streets of Minnesota to NSPM-7, the White House has been using the word “terror” to justify its violence. This is a dangerous and alarming trend that has the potential to not only violate fundamental human rights but also undermine the very foundations of democracy. The recent actions of the Trump administration have raised concerns about the misuse of the term “terror” and the consequences it could have on the rule of law.

It is no secret that President Trump has been using rhetoric that divides rather than unites. His numerous tweets and speeches have targeted immigrants, journalists, and political opponents, labeling them as “enemies of the state” and “terrorists”. This language has not only created a toxic and polarizing atmosphere but has also given rise to the belief that violence against these individuals is justifiable. This belief was recently put to the test when Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, citing him as a “terrorist” threat to the United States.

While the killing of Soleimani sparked international outrage, it also brought attention to the broader implications of labeling individuals as “terrorists”. The term “terrorist” is not a legal term and does not have a clear definition. It is often used in a subjective manner to justify actions that would otherwise be considered unlawful. This opens the door for abuse of power and human rights violations.

The Trump administration’s use of the term “terrorist” to justify violence is not limited to foreign figures. It has also been used to justify the excessive use of force against protesters in Minnesota. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, President Trump threatened to deploy the military to “dominate” the streets and labeled protesters as “thugs” and “terrorists”. This rhetoric not only further escalated tensions but also gave the green light for law enforcement to use excessive force against peaceful protesters, resulting in injuries and even deaths.

In addition to its impact on individuals, the labeling of groups or individuals as “terrorists” also has broader implications for national security policies. Following the 9/11 attacks, the US government passed the National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7) to authorize the killing of “terrorists” anywhere in the world, without following due process. This policy has been used to justify drone strikes in countries like Yemen and Somalia, resulting in countless civilian casualties. The broad and vague definition of “terrorist” allows the government to target individuals who may not necessarily pose a threat to national security, further undermining the rule of law.

The Trump administration’s reliance on the term “terrorist” is not only dangerous but also hypocritical. While the President labels immigrants and political opponents as “terrorists”, he has failed to condemn actual acts of terrorism committed by white supremacists. This double standard not only fuels hate and division but also undermines efforts to combat real threats to national security.

It is essential to recognize that the misuse of the term “terrorist” is not a new phenomenon. Governments throughout history have used this term to justify violence and suppress dissent. However, in a democratic society, the rule of law and respect for human rights are crucial for maintaining a just and peaceful society. The use of the term “terrorist” to justify violence goes against these fundamental values and must be challenged.

The power of language should not be underestimated. The use of words like “terrorist” to dehumanize individuals and groups has real-life consequences. It not only justifies violence but also creates a culture of fear and hatred. As citizens, it is our responsibility to question the labeling of individuals as “terrorists” and hold our leaders accountable for their actions.

In the words of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” It is time to reject the politics of fear and division and instead, strive towards building a society based on love, empathy, and justice. The use of the term “terrorist” to justify violence must be challenged, and it is crucial for us, as a society, to stand up for the protection of human rights and the rule of law.
