Every Album Certified Double Diamond by the RIAA: Full List

For many music artists and fans, receiving a sales award for their record-breaking album is a dream come true. It’s a recognition of their hard work, talent, and the impact they have had on the music industry. These awards not only serve as a symbol of success but also hold a significant cultural value. And while we are all familiar with the prestigious platinum and diamond sales awards, it may come as a surprise that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) did not have a sales award higher than gold until 1976.

Before we dive into the history of RIAA’s sales awards, let’s first understand what they represent. The RIAA is a trade organization that represents the recording industry in the United States. They are responsible for certifying and awarding albums and singles based on their sales and streaming numbers. The sales awards are given in the form of a Gold, Platinum, and Diamond record, depending on the number of units sold.

The Gold record, which represents 500,000 units sold, was introduced in 1958. This award was a significant milestone for artists, as it was the first time their record sales were being officially recognized. It gave them a sense of achievement and validation for their hard work. However, as the music industry continued to grow and evolve, the RIAA realized the need for higher sales awards to accurately represent the success of artists.

In 1976, the RIAA introduced the Platinum record, which represented one million units sold. This was a significant step forward in recognizing the success of artists and their impact on the music industry. The first album to receive a Platinum award was the Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)”. This groundbreaking achievement set a new standard for success in the music industry.

But it wasn’t until 1999 that the RIAA introduced the Diamond record, representing 10 million units sold. This award was first given to Garth Brooks for his album “Double Live”. Since then, only a handful of artists have achieved this feat, including Taylor Swift, Adele, and Michael Jackson. The Diamond record remains the highest sales award given by the RIAA, representing the highest level of success and impact in the music industry.

So why did it take so long for the RIAA to introduce higher sales awards? The answer lies in the changing landscape of the music industry. In the 1960s and 70s, the music industry was dominated by physical record sales. However, with the rise of digital music and streaming services in the late 90s and early 2000s, the RIAA had to adapt to a new way of measuring success. This led to the introduction of the Digital Single Award, which recognizes the digital sales and streaming numbers of a single song.

Today, the RIAA continues to evolve its sales awards to accurately reflect the success of artists in the ever-changing music industry. In 2013, they introduced the Latin Digital Award, and in 2016, they added the Latin Gold, Platinum, and Diamond awards. These awards celebrate the success of Latin music and its impact on the global music scene.

The introduction of higher sales awards by the RIAA not only recognizes the success of artists but also reflects the changing landscape of the music industry. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of artists who continue to push the boundaries and make an impact through their music. These awards also serve as a source of motivation for aspiring artists, showing them that with hard work and talent, they too can achieve success and be recognized for their contributions to the music world.

In conclusion, the fact that the RIAA did not have a sales award higher than gold until 1976 may come as a surprise to many. However, it is a testament to the evolution of the music industry and the need to adapt to changing times. The higher sales awards introduced by the RIAA not only recognize the success of artists but also serve as a source of motivation for future generations of musicians. As the music industry continues to evolve, we can only imagine what the future holds for these prestigious sales awards.
