Accepted at Universities, Unable to Get Visas: Inside Trump’s War on International Students

With the start of the new academic year just around the corner, universities in the United States are gearing up to welcome a new batch of international students. However, this year, the excitement and anticipation are being overshadowed by a looming threat – the Trump administration’s war on international students.

In recent years, the number of international students in the US has been steadily increasing, with over a million students from around the world choosing to pursue their higher education in the country. These students not only bring diversity and cultural exchange to American campuses but also contribute significantly to the economy, with their spending on tuition, housing, and other expenses.

However, this year, the situation is different. The COVID-19 pandemic has already caused disruptions in the education sector, and now, the Trump administration’s policies are adding to the uncertainty and chaos. With interview slots vanishing and arbitrary visa denials, the US could see 150,000 fewer international students this fall, according to a recent report by The Intercept.

The first blow came in July when the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that international students on F-1 and M-1 visas would not be allowed to stay in the country if their universities switched to online-only classes due to the pandemic. This decision caused panic and confusion among students, many of whom were left with no choice but to return to their home countries, despite the risks and challenges posed by the pandemic.

The ICE policy was met with widespread criticism and legal challenges, leading to the administration rescinding the decision. However, the damage had already been done. Many students had already made the difficult decision to leave the US, and the uncertainty surrounding the situation has made it difficult for them to plan their academic future.

But the challenges for international students do not end there. The Trump administration’s policies have also made it increasingly difficult for students to obtain visas to study in the US. The Intercept’s report highlights the case of a student from Iran who was accepted into a PhD program at a prestigious university but was denied a visa without any explanation. This is just one of the many cases where students have been arbitrarily denied visas, despite having been accepted into American universities.

The impact of these policies is not limited to individual students. Universities in the US heavily rely on international students for their financial stability, and a significant drop in their numbers could have severe consequences. Many universities are already facing budget cuts and financial strain due to the pandemic, and a decline in international students could further exacerbate the situation.

Moreover, the US risks losing its position as a top destination for international students. With other countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK offering more welcoming policies and opportunities for international students, the US could see a decline in its global competitiveness in the education sector.

The Trump administration’s policies not only harm international students but also go against the values of diversity and inclusivity that have long been associated with American universities. The US has always prided itself on being a melting pot of cultures and ideas, and international students play a crucial role in maintaining this diversity. By creating barriers and obstacles for these students, the US is sending a message that it is no longer a welcoming and inclusive country.

It is essential to note that international students are not just a source of revenue for universities, but they also bring immense value to the country. Many of these students go on to become leaders in their fields, contributing to the US economy and society. By turning away these talented individuals, the US is not only losing out on potential economic and cultural benefits but also damaging its reputation as a global leader in education.

The Trump administration’s policies have caused chaos and uncertainty for international students, and it is time for the US to re-evaluate its stance. The country has always been a top destination for international students, and it should continue to welcome and support them, especially during these challenging times.

As the new academic year approaches, it is crucial for the US to send a message of inclusivity and support to international students. The administration must ensure that the visa process is fair and transparent, and that students are not denied visas without valid reasons. Universities must also be given the flexibility to offer online classes without jeopardizing the status of international students.

It is time for the US to recognize the value and contributions of international students and to welcome them with open arms. The country’s future as a global leader in education depends on it. Let us not allow the Trump administration’s war on international students to tarnish the reputation
