Trump Prepares to Revoke Lifesaving Abortion Care for Veterans

A new rule proposed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has raised serious concerns among veterans and advocates alike. This pending rule, if implemented, would result in the loss of crucial health care services for hundreds of thousands of veterans in states with abortion bans. This move by the Trump administration has sparked outrage and rightfully so, as it could have dire consequences for the health and well-being of our brave veterans.

Currently, the VA provides comprehensive health care services to all eligible veterans, regardless of their state’s laws on abortion. However, with the new rule, the VA would be forced to deny access to abortion care for veterans in states that have banned the procedure, even in cases where it is medically necessary. This goes against the very principles of the VA, which is supposed to provide necessary and lifesaving care to our veterans.

Abortion is a highly personal and often difficult decision for any person to make. For veterans, who have served and sacrificed for our country, denying them access to a legal and essential health care service is a grave injustice. Many veterans have to rely on the VA for their health care needs, and restricting access to abortion care would have a devastating impact on their health and well-being.

This is particularly concerning for women veterans who have served in combat zones and may have experienced sexual trauma or violence during their service. For them, the ability to make decisions about their own reproductive health and receive necessary care is crucial. Denying them access to abortion care is a clear violation of their rights and is unacceptable.

Furthermore, this rule will disproportionately affect low-income and minority veterans who may not have the means to travel to another state to receive abortion care. This will only exacerbate existing disparities in access to health care for these communities and create additional barriers for veterans who are already facing significant challenges in accessing care.

The proposed rule also contradicts the VA’s mission to “care for him who shall have borne the battle.” Denying essential health care services to veterans is a betrayal of their service and their sacrifice. These brave men and women have put their lives on the line for our country, and they deserve better.

The VA’s own research has shown that abortion restrictions can have negative effects on women’s health, including increasing rates of maternal mortality. By implementing this rule, the VA would knowingly be putting the lives of veterans at risk. This is not something that can be ignored or brushed aside.

Thankfully, there is still hope to prevent this disastrous rule from being implemented. The public has until August 26, 2019, to submit comments to the VA and make their voices heard. It is imperative that we all speak out against this rule and demand that the VA continues to provide comprehensive health care services to all veterans, regardless of their state’s laws on abortion.

In addition, Congress can also play a crucial role in protecting veterans’ access to abortion care. Lawmakers must pass legislation that permanently removes the ban on federal funding for abortion services and ensures that all veterans have access to the full range of reproductive health care services they need and deserve.

The fight to protect access to abortion care for veterans is far from over. We must continue to advocate for our veterans and demand that they receive the quality health care services they need and deserve. We cannot let this proposed rule stand and jeopardize the lives and well-being of our nation’s heroes.

In times like these, it is crucial for us to stand in solidarity with our veterans and show them the appreciation and support they deserve. They have stood up for us, now it’s our turn to stand up for them. Let’s make sure that the VA upholds its mission and continues to provide essential health care services to all veterans, regardless of their state’s laws on abortion.
