Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (iOS) Review: A Near-Perfect Port for the Small Screen

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, originally released in 2010, has received a modern iOS port courtesy of Feral Interactive. As fans of the iconic Tomb Raider series, we were thrilled to hear the news and wasted no time in downloading the game. After spending a few days with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, we can confidently say that it is a near-perfect port for iOS, one which promises to become a great avenue to pass the time, especially during daily commute.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light takes place in Central America, where the fearless adventurer Lara Croft teams up with a Mayan warrior named Totec to stop the evil Xolotl from unleashing darkness upon the world. The game features a unique isometric viewpoint and combines action-packed gameplay with puzzle-solving elements, making it a refreshing change from the traditional Tomb Raider games.

The first thing that struck us about the iOS port was the stunning graphics. Feral Interactive has done an excellent job of optimizing the game for the platform, and the result is a visually impressive experience. The environments are beautifully detailed, and the character models are just as impressive, with Lara Croft looking as fierce and determined as ever. The game also runs smoothly, with no noticeable lag or frame drops, even on older iOS devices.

Controls are always a concern when it comes to mobile gaming, but Feral Interactive has once again proven their expertise in this area. The touch controls are intuitive and responsive, making it easy to maneuver Lara and perform her signature moves. The virtual joystick for movement and the various buttons for shooting, jumping, and using items are well-placed and do not obstruct the view. There is also an option to customize the controls to suit your preference, which is a welcome feature.

One of the standout features of the iOS port is the co-op mode. The original game allowed for local co-op on consoles, and Feral Interactive has managed to replicate this experience on iOS. You can team up with a friend via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and play through the game together, solving puzzles and battling enemies side by side. This adds a new level of fun and replay value to the game, and we highly recommend trying it out.

In terms of gameplay, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light delivers an enjoyable and challenging experience. The game is divided into levels, with each level featuring a mix of combat, exploration, and puzzles. The combat is fast-paced and satisfying, with a variety of weapons and abilities at Lara’s disposal. The puzzles, on the other hand, require you to use your wits and the unique abilities of both Lara and Totec to progress. The game strikes a good balance between the two, and we never felt bored or overwhelmed.

Another aspect that impressed us was the inclusion of various in-game challenges and achievements. These challenges range from completing levels within a certain time limit to collecting hidden artifacts, adding an extra layer of challenge for those looking to fully complete the game. The achievements, on the other hand, give you a sense of accomplishment and add to the game’s replay value.

The iOS port also features all the downloadable content (DLC) from the original game, including additional levels and characters. This means you get the complete Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light experience on your iOS device, without having to purchase any additional content. We appreciate Feral Interactive’s efforts in ensuring that the port is on par with the original game in terms of content.

In conclusion, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a fantastic addition to the iOS gaming library. Feral Interactive has done an exceptional job of bringing this beloved game to the platform, and the result is a near-perfect port that is sure to please both fans and newcomers alike. With its stunning graphics, intuitive controls, co-op mode, and challenging gameplay, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a must-have for any iOS gamer. So, whether you’re a fan of the Tomb Raider series or simply looking for a fun and engaging game to pass the time, we highly recommend giving this port a try. Happy raiding!
